南州飯田は、江戸と京・大阪の東西を結ぶ街道の要衝として、古くから繁栄してきました。

遠州と松本方面をつなぐ南北の街道も重要な交通路であり、江戸時代には伊那谷を南北に流れる天竜川は通船で大変にぎわったといいます。

現代に受け継がれる祭りや芸能、郷土食や言葉などさまざまな場面で東西・南北文化の影響が色濃くあらわれていることがわかります。
中央・南の両アルプスに囲まれた山国ならではの暮らしも、飯田に息づく文化のひとつです。

時に厳しい表情を見せる自然との共存は、生活の知恵を生み、美しく豊かな四季への喜びを感じさせます。

最近も、環境モデル都市に選ばれるなど、市民が一体となって自然と共生する暮らしをめざしています。

Located on a highway that linked Tokyo in the east with Kyoto and Osaka in the west, and Matsumoto in the north with Enshu in the south, lida has long enjoyed prosperity.

Along the north-south Ina Valley flows the beautiful Tenryu (heavenly dragon) River, once a busy waterway, and on two sides are majestic mountain ranges - the Central and South Japan Alps.
Nourished by this natural heritage and also by its history, the city has developed a distinctive lifestyle and culture, seen in its performing arts, tasted in its cuisine and heard in its soft dialect.

More recently, lida has also been selected as a model "environmental city."
